Events 2008: Buenos
Aires Tartan Army: St. Andrews Day
Last 29th November Scotland in Argentina organized
the first gathering of the Buenos Aires Tartan
Army. It took place at “The Rozz Pub”
Medrano 152 between Diaz Velez and Mitre Streets
– Almagro – Buenos Aires.
A heavy rain began falling minutes before the
event started, the rain was responsible for
a small delay. Despite the heavy rain, old and
new friends came and the place was full pretty
soon. The bravest arrived punctually and while
we waited for others to be able to get to the
Pub, “The Spirit of the Tattoo”
was projected to keep everyone entertained.
Pipers Alfonso Vignes, Leo McKerlie and Kevin
Ham opened the event. Eddie MacRae and his Tartan
Army Boys marched along signing. A special drink
called “St Andrew” was prepared
for the occasion, the blue colour drink has
“Whisky”. Everyone enjoyed “St
Andrew’s Sandwiches” and the “St
Andrew’s Drink” which were devised
by members of Scotland in Argentina and the
Barman from “The Rozz”.

Scotland in Argentina’s exhibition group
“Dalriada” presented Scottish Country
Dances and Highland Dances and then people were
invited to join in.

Mónica Loreto from Scotland in Argentina
talked about St Andrew and the origin of the
Saltire and after that everyone was told to
fill in their glasses for the Highland Toast.
More bagpipe music followed and everyone soon
join in for “Flower of Scotland”,
and after that Mrs. Sonia MacDonald recited
her poem dedicated to William Wallace.

After the recitation,
some musicians played and sang “Massacre
of Glencoe” and the story was told in
an unusual way since Campbells and MacDonalds
were sitting at the same table.
Almost at the very end of the event, the Television
interview where members of Scotland in Argentina
participated was shown. The interview took place
during the football match Argentina Vs Scotland
last 19th November. Well known faces appeared
and everyone laughed at our sense of humour
during the TV Interview and people enjoyed some
comments and stories told specially, those referring
to What’s under the kilt, the question
everyone asks.

More Scottish Country dances followed, everyone
was having a great time and we all stayed until
the pub’s closing time.

What is our Tartan Army like?
